I lead a team and I like it that way. I do like to have my own space and to able to squirrel myself into my office and work alone for part of the time but having a team is the thing that I like the most about my job. Easy to say when you’re the boss though!

I work in different teams on the different projects that I am involved in, and I have different roles in the different teams.

In some projects I am the main investigator, I generate the ideas, carry out the testing, write up the results and other people help me to do this.

In another project I have a team of people who carry out the testing and collect the data for me.

In a different project I help the main investigator, they can use my knowledge about exercise to develop programmes for different groups of people or they sometimes ask me which questions like which is the best way to measure how physically active someone is being?

I love working in a team. It means that we can get much further much faster in research by using everyones individual skills and expertise.

Most of the time in a team but occasionally it’s good to go solo. Some of the best ideas come out of working in teams. At other times you can just have an inspirational moment alone. I had a Prof who said his best ideas came to him on the toilet!

In research you can’t do everything so team work is essential.

When I am collecting results from people I work on my own. However, when I design my projects I have help from my 2 supervisors (these are a bit like teachers). They guide me through my work and give me help when I am stuck with something. They will also help me with writing up my results and findings. I like working as part of this team as they are far more experienced than me and you can learn alot from working with other people and listening to what they have to say.

I am also working as part of a big project with people from Greece, France, Spain and Norway and I really enjoy this! Again though…they are helping me to design my project but I havr to collect the results on my own..then we will put them all together and see what we have found in the different countries!

I work closely with a guy called Adrian. We are doing similar projects so we help each other out. Sometimes I have to be in the lab at 6:00am so its nice to have Adrian for some company when I’m wishing I’m still in bed. My supervisor is also apart of my team. He is a busy man so isn’t always around but if i have any problems or want to talk about any new studies then he is there for me.

Being a scientist is also about working on your own and believing in yourself. I am lucky as i have both an individual and team working atmosphere.
