Yes, I’ve applied my research to horse sports. I also think about my own biomechanics when I run and choose running shoes, but that only benefits me!

I often use mine and others research finding to advise people on the types of exercise they should be doing.

I am a qualified health and fitness instructor and an aerobics instructor (although I am not working as one at the moment) so people are always asking me about the best types of exercise for them. Recently my boyfriend broke his toe and I wrote him a rehabilitation programme based on work that I have read. Also I’m going to visit my Grandma in a couple of weeks and will take her a copy of the exercise manual that we are testing on frail elderly people to see if it improves their ability to get around in their day to day life. She is 87 years old now and is getting frailer so hopefully it will help her.

Sort of…I have learnt alot about psychological skills training (this is something something sport psychologists do with athletes to help them perform their best) and I try to use this myself sometimes when I am playing hockey. It’s not really my own idea… but more like applying what I have learnt about sport psychology from other peoples research to my own life and sports performance.

Psychological skills training is things like setting yourself goals, imagery (where you imagine yourself performing a certain action well before you do it….golfers do this alot), self talk (postive things only!) and thought stopping (when you mess up in a game you stop the thought and replace it with a postive one which will help you perform better!).

I’ve skied on our self-waxing skis in competitions and did reasonably well. My daughter won the British Moguls championships using one of our new waxes but she didn’t know at the time! A bit of psychology as well as science!

No not yet but i’m hoping to in the future. Increasing fat burning would be very useful for athletes as it means they reserve other energy stores which they can use when they are getting tired.
