      I did a degree, then a PhD, then became a Lecturer, then a senior Lecturer then a Professor. It was based on my research as well as my teaching. You have to earn a lot of research money (which isn’t really yours) and write a lot of papers that get published. You also have to try to get people to know about you and your work all over the world.
