In sport, caffeine is a controlled substance so you can get banned if there is too much in your blood. You would need to drink 8 cups of coffee to exceed the current IOC limit. But people do take caffeine tablets so this can be a big problem. Caffeine doesn’t really improve performance except keeping you alert. One of the problems is that it increases blood pressure so can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

I think this depends on what you are drinking (coffee, energy drinks), and each individual! Caffeine is a stimulant which makes you feel more awake and alert and then when it leaves your system you end up feeling tired and craving it again. Everything is ok in moderation but if you drink alot of caffeine continously then you will probably end up feeling very tired and this will affect your performance in the long run.
