I would talk to somebody about it like a teacher at school or a grown up you are close to.

We have University students here in Newcastle who have done operational tours of Afghanistan and Iraq, returned safely and started their degrees. I admire them, but the thought of what they had done (for us) always scared me.

Then my friend, a marine commando, went to Afghanistan and was killed in a mine blast. He helped me to understand that the thing I was afraid of was his death, whereas he had already accepted that risk and this was his choice, to try to change the world. He was proud to be a marine and made a vital contribution to a cause that he believed in, and for him, this is what he wanted from his life.

      Over 99% of soldiers survive.

I have a friend who is in the Marines in Afghanistan. He is finding it ffine as it’s what he wants to do. I think 300 troops have been killed so far but there are many thousands out there. Talk to people if you are worried.
