I think dreams are unconscious thoughts that all come together in a weird mix.

There are different theories. Some say they are used for relaxation, others for problem solving. Nightmares usually occur at times of stress. They are not usually planned but are the result of unconscious anxieties or expectations.

I don’t that dreams are planned I think they just happen. Sometimes we dream about something which is relevant to what has happened to us during the day. Like if we have been to the fair we sometimes will dream about it that night…other times we can dream about something really random…i’m not sure why that is!

There are loads of different theories about the purpose of dreams…

A psychologist called Freud believed that we dream so that we can release our deep, secret desires that we are not allowed to express in real life. He believed that all dreams had a secret meaning and what we dream about is not actually what we think about…but it symbolises something else.

Other people believe that dreams allow us to solve problems that we can’t solve in real life. We go to sleep with a problem and wake up with the answer. Although this may be more of a way to ‘use’ our dreams than a ‘purpose’ of dreaming.

the more recent view of scientist today is that dreams are a way of clearing and organising our mind because we take in so much information day to day. They suggest it works like a computer organising the events of the day into folders and deleting the rubbish that it doesn’t want to keep.

Another idea is that dreams are a way that humans can prepare themself for survival and a way of practising the things we need to be able to do this.We might dream about being chased by a monster because one day it might happen! We are practising it!

Others believe that dreaming is the brain’s way of keeping active while we sleep and exercising the pathways between the brain cells.

There are loads of different theories but you can chose which one you like best 🙂

It’s a way of sorting information in your brain. They’re not really very planned, but can seem it when you think back over them.
