Depression is a low mood state and a feeling of sadness. People suffer from depression for different reasons. Sometimes it is linked to a negative life event such as the death of someone you love.

Depression can mean feeling low, or a depressive illness. The illness related to a hormonal imbalance affecting brain function (and therefore mood). It’s not clear what causes it, but it could be genetic and it could be triggered by events, other ilnesses or drugs.
