Obviously, no one can be sure. When I have lost friends to suicide it seems that they have lost perspective, and felt overwhelmed and unable to continue. Sometimes things seem so difficult that you can’t imagine that they will improve. The tragedy is that they never get the chance to reconsider.
We had the same thing – that with hindsight you wonder why you didn’t realise and help. It’s hard to accept that you couldn’t have known and there is nothing that you could have done. One of my friends died during my PhD, at Oxford Uni, surrounded by hundreds of the most intelligent people in the country and we didn’t manage to realise or help.
I have a similar story, my friend had underlying mental health issues which contributed to his suicide. Its very hard to deal with. And i have spent a long time trying to work out why it happened. I think that there are many reasons people choose to commit suicide, but that its usually about what they are feeling at that moment, alot of negative emotions and a feeling of helplessness. But its important not to blame yourself, at the end of the day each person chooses their actions, and while you should always support people who need help, you can’t stop something like that.
