No one knows for sure. Type 1 diabetes develops when the body’s own defence system (the immune system) attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. What causes the immune system to do this is not entirely known.
Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age but it is more likely to occur before the age of 40 years old. Most people who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are aged 5 – 20 years old.

Yes, scientists are working on finding out why this happens. Once we know it will be much easier to find a way to cure the disease.
