I would use it to complete a documentary film I am working on about climate change and sport and then get it distributed to schools to highlight the problems we face. In the end it would make the world a better place. Media is cheap! To do the research we need millions of pounds!

I want to take people who don’t have much contact with the interesting parts of science and show them what we actually do – in our University and in industry (like a special effects studio).

I would like to think my research would make the world a better place,

With more McDonalds on each corner and all the sweets and chocolate we can buy people worldwide are becoming more unhealthy and more overweight- which leads to health problems! I’m trying to use healthy foods as well as exercise to increase the amount of fat that people burn off. Therefore, i would use the money on my research to hope in the long term make the world a better place.

I wouldn’t be able to do this directly…for example..I wouldn’t be fixing holes in the O Zone layer anytime soon…but I would help indirectly by trying to help the young people in the world to have a better quality of life…through helping them to stay fit and healthy. My research aims to help make more young people fit, active and healthy. And other scientists have shown that people who are like this are more happy and positive about life and themselves in general! The world would be a better place if everyone was like this! :).

The money for this competition has to be used for something called Public Engagement. This means that I would have to spend the money on explaining my research to members of the public who don’t necessarily know much about the work that I do. It is really important for scientists to tell people about their work and findings because if they do not share their work with the public, changes can not be made to the way that we live.

If i won the money I would set up an event for older people, their carers and professional who work with older people to explain and show them the benefits that exercising can have in older people and make them aware of what is available to them near where they live. Hopefully this would encourage them to engage in more exercise making them healthier and happier (making the world a better place).

Also, if I won the money from I’m a Scientist… it might help me to win more money in future to do more research so winning would help with my research too!
